Luan Nguyen received his B.S. in mathematics and chemistry from Grand Valley State University in 2011. He conducted his Ph.D. research at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Notre Dame from 2011 – 2016. Luan’s doctoral research focused on in-situ surface characterization of catalysts during heterogeneous catalytic reactions using high pressure high temperature scanning tunneling microscope (HP-HT STM) and ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS). Unlike ex-situ characterization, in-situ study allows for identification of the active phase of a catalyst during a catalytic reaction hence provide insight for further development of enhanced catalysts. Currently, Luan is focusing instrumentation development to further push the capability of AP-XPS for in-situ investigation of solid catalysts in liquid reactants.
