Kakasaheb Nandiwale received his bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology Engineering from Shivaji University in 2011 and his master’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 2013 from the University Institute of Chemical Technology, North Maharashtra University in India. From 2012 to 2014, he pursued research to develop catalytic processes for chemicals and fuels at Catalysis and Inorganic Chemistry Division of CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) in Pune, India. He joined the University of Kansas in spring 2015 to pursue his doctoral degree. Under the guidance of Prof. Bala Subramaniam, Kakasaheb is currently a Graduate Research Assistant at KU’s Center for Environmentally Beneficial Catalysis. His research focuses on the catalytic conversion of lignin.  This complex, fibrous material is a widely available byproduct of cellulosic ethanol and paper production. With the right catalytic system, lignin has the potential to become a cost-competitive, renewable starting material for many consumer products. Kakasaheb is passionate about research, after graduation, he plans to pursue either an academic research position or delve into industry.
